Random Fact Of The Week

aberystwyth fairtrade townDid you know……

On the 1st March 2005 Aberystwyth became the 79th fair trade town in the UK.

In total it took approximately a year for the town to achieve its fair trade status, after the Masnach Deg group was founded in March 2004.

The original group was set up in order to provide useful information to the people of Aberystwyth about where they could find fair trade products in the town, and also to promote their overall use within the area.

In order to achieve the status, Aberystwyth had to meet 5 goals as set out by the Fairtrade Foundation:

1. The local council must pass a resolution supporting Fairtrade, and also agrees to use Fairtrade products where possible.

2. A variety of Fairtrade goods must be available in local retail outlets and served be served by local caterers.

3. Local employers and community organisations must support Fairtrade and use Fairtrade products where possible.

4. The use of local media and organised events to raise awareness and understanding of Fairtrade.

5. A local Fairtrade group meets regularly to ensure the Fairtrade Town campaign continues to develop and gain new support.
