at the edge art exhibition aberystwythAt The Edge: British Art 1950 – 2000 is a touring art exhibition which explores British art from the second half of the 20th century.

And until January 22nd it is available for you to see in Gallery I at the Arts Centre.

The collection includes ceramics, printed works, sculpture and of course paintings.

The collection has come from four seperate arts galleries across the North West of England, including Preston, Oldham, Rochdale and Bolton.

The exhibition features a number of contempory works from the likes of Lucian Freud, Graham Sutherland, Laura Ford and many others. As well as showcasing some of the most ground breaking and thought provoking pieces from this period in British art, the exhibition also looks at the problems faced in the building of this public art collection, including the wall of hostile opinion within the public to contemporary art at the time, and the difficulty in securing funds to purchase these works.

Many of these problems are still faced today by many organisations, and it is an enlightening experience to hear some of the stories surrounding the accumulatuion this collection of artwork.

The exhibition is free, and is open during the day time at the Arts Centre in Gallery 1.
