Promenade Shelters To Be Replaced

seafront shelter aberystwythTwo seafront shelters in Aberystwyth are to be replaced at a cost of £60,000.

Built in the 1920′s they have been a feature of the prom for over 80 years but have recently been battered by bad weather.

The council has taken the decision, as it will be cheaper to build new ones the maintain the ones that currently stand.

However, the council has stated that the new replacement shelters will match the originals, whilst being built from much sturdier material which should ensure that they last for longer, and also incur less maintenance costs overall.

The Welsh Assembly has also stumped up some of the cash which is required to replace the original shelters so Ceredigion Council has not been burdened with the entire cost.

Work is expected to be completed by next Spring, in time for the seasonal influx of tourists during the Easter period, with the shelter closer to the Pier being positioned further away from the road to make it more accessible from both sides.

At present it is quite common to walk past the shelter and see it empty on both sides, with one being exposed to the elements of the sea, and the other being blocked in by parked cars so hopefully this will lead to it being used on a more regular basis.
