Random Fact Of The Week

mail coachDid you know………

The last legitimate mail coach to run on UK roads ran between Shrewsbury and Aberystwyth in 1862.

Mail coaches ran in the UK from 1784, and were horse drawn carriages which were used to carry mail deliveries around the country. At the rear of the carriage would stand a Royal Mail employed guard in order to defend the load from highwaymen and opportunist criminals.

The final Royal Mail guardsman on the journey was known as John Rea, who after the last trip settled in the town to become the landlord of the White Horse Hotel on Portland Street which is now occupied by Varsity.

The mail coaches eventually gave way to the trains which had now spread across much of the UK, including Aberystwyth which was beginning to benefit from an influx of middle class Victorian tourists.
