Aberystwyth War Memorial

aberystwyth castle Built between 1921 and 1923 Aberystwyth war memorial, located in the castle grounds, holds the name of 189 men and women who died in World War I and World War II.

Thought by many to be one of the best examples of a memorial to those who died in the great war in Britain, it towers over Aberystwyth’s southern promenade.

The memorial cost a total of £10,000, which was said to be £1 for every person in Aberystwyth at the time, and much of the money was donated from the local YMCA.

The memorial itself was designed by Italian Mario Rutelli, who was based in Palermo, and is inscribed in Welsh with “Dros Ryddid”, translating as “For Freedom”.

Adorned with poppies at certain times of the year, it is a perfect place to sit and reflect, and watch the sun go down.
