Ynys Hir is a beautiful RSPB nature reserve, 12 miles inland from Aberystwyth, set in the Dyfi Valley covering over 1000 acres. It was most recently used as the base for BBC Springwatch in 2011.

With a wide variety of landscape, from woodland to marshland, Ynys Hir has a huge variety of species of bird for everyone to see. The habitats include:

Woodland: In the spring time the woods are full of bluebells, which is a beautiful sight to behold. Several species of butterflies can be found here. The oak tree rich woodland is home to many species such as buzzards, woodpeckers, pied-flycatchers, warblers, and redstarts.

Freshwater Areas: Teaming with dragonflies and damselflies at certain times of the year, you will also see cormorants and red-breasted mergansers from the overlooking bird hide.

Saltmarshes: The Ynys Hir salt marshes are popular with various waders on their migration journey at specific times of the year, and provide spectacular views over the estuary into Snowdonia.

Peatbog: A wide variety of plant life can be seen in the peat bogs of Ynys Hir.

Reedbed: The reserve’s reedbed, which is small in size, is home to several breeding species of warbler.
